Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is the percentage added to your direct costs (Markup = Profit / Cost). Margin is the percentage of the final price you keep as profit (Margin = Profit / Price). For example, a 50% markup equals a 33.3% margin.

How should contractors account for business overhead?

Overhead includes costs that don't belong to a single project: general liability insurance, software subscriptions, shop rent, vehicle leases, and tool maintenance. Most small contracting crews carry between 8% and 20% overhead. If you don't add this percentage to your job estimate before calculating your profit margin, your overhead comes straight out of your pocket.
